‘Joie de vivre’ is a French phrase which literally (or superficially) means ‘joyful living.’ However it is the underlying spirit of the phrase which eludes translation and, all too often, our lives. Today we have a bewildering array of choices when it comes to food + drink, and it is not simply a matter of deciding what to eat or drink. Taking wine as an example, we may also consider other important criteria such as: how it was made, who made it, where were the grapes grown, and when was it made (the vintage). Now while the answers to these questions may help us decide on a particular selection, they are all in the realm of the cerebral—not the sensual. The point is that the spirit of Joie de vivre lies not in our knowledge of technical data about food + drink, but rather in the sating of a thirst or hunger. Moreover eating and drinking are two of life’s essential pleasures—visceral not cerebral.
