Dickie O’Neal’s Irish American Family Pub & Restaurant is owned and operated by a 3rd generation Irish American. My pub is fashioned after the Irish-American pubs that cropped up around the neighborhoods of eastern Ohio, specifically the town of Youngstown. My family is the Gillespie Clan, from Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland. In 1918, the Gillespie family, (Michael, Rose Anna, Peter, and Mary), immigrated to the United States, via the S.S. Columbia, and settled in Youngtown, Ohio. The Gillespie’s welcomed their first American-born child, Rose, in 1924. Rose is my grandmother, otherwise known as Grammy Rose. Until his death in 1963, Michael Gillespie (like most immigrants to “Ytown”), supported his family by working in the steel mills of the Mahoning Valley, Youngstown, Ohio.
